I Look Insane in All of my YouTube Video Thumbnails

I make videos fairly regularly, but I am certainly not an actor, or a TV personality; I’ve never taken classes on how to carry myself on camera. At some point when I have more time to devote to it, I’d have fun taking an acting class just so I could learn what kind of posture and movements carry over best on camera. At the very least, I’d like to learn what full-time vloggers do to ensure that they have a good frame to use as a thumbnail preview for their video. Every time I create a video, I look normal enough while watching it, but my mannerisms do not translate into still frames. Here’s an example of what my choices are for the preview thumbnail when I make a video:

YouTube Thumbnails

Yep…I look deranged in every single one of them. I wish I could say that this is just a one-off problem, but this is what I’m up against pretty much any time I make a video:

Experts say that you should remember to be animated on camera, but I think I could benefit from being a little LESS animated!

Eardoc Video Review: Exploring Potential New Options For Ear Pain

Sample provided for review. This video is a recap of my personal experience and not intended to diagnose, prevent, treat or cure any disease or medical condition. Always consult with a physician before starting or using any new program, product or activity.

Today I’m sharing a video review of Eardoc, a unique product I learned about while bloghopping recently. Eardoc is a small vibrating tool which you hold behind your ears with the aim of opening up the Eustachian tube to drain trapped fluids. This has been advertised for a number of possible applications, such as an ear infection treatment in children to use for Eustachian Tube Dysfunction and ear pain on flights – which is what I detail using it for in the video! Check out my thoughts on this product and let me know if you’ve ever tried something like this. (And if any of my readers have Eustachian Tube Dysfunction, please feel free to weigh in with your advice!)

It’s our 9th week using the Total Gym XLS:

Measurements Week 9

I spent last week wrapping up a lot of monster projects, and it feels good. My schedule has been a lot more manageable over the last few days which makes it possible to take much better care of myself – not just in terms of exercise, but also in terms of overall rest and morale. As a business owner, it’s hard to set those boundaries because there is always “More to do” – it’s easy on paper to say that you should just draw an arbitrary line in the sand and always quit work at X o’clock, but this is a huge challenge in social media because the very nature of this work is that it is time-sensitive and often you have to quickly jump on opportunities. One important point I’ve taken home over the last few years is that the business approach this field is different in many ways from my traditional journalism background, so it’s important not to weigh myself down with business practices that are no longer practical – I think it’s important to know when to quickly toss aside “The old model” because everything is changing so rapidly. I think we’re all doing our best to figure out the best ways to achieve work-life balance during this transition phase – and that goes for everyone in the modern world, not just those working in social media! – so it’s important to just do our best and go with it as we forge our path and feel out the best way forward.

So for someone like me, the Total Gym is such a lifesaver because of its flexibility. It’s there as much or as little as I need it – the other night, I started a pot of water boiling on the stove, loaded up the washing machine, and then hopped on the XLS – which is located in the room between the kitchen and laundry room – to do a set of squats and crunches. When the water boiled, I was done with my mini-workout! It’s great being able to work on this machine spontaneously, since my big challenge working in this field is how erratic my schedule can be. It’s constantly changing, so the flexibility of being able to workout whenever it’s convenient that day really helps immensely. Jai loves to get on this all through the day – he’ll walk by it and decide to hop on for a few minutes to work on a muscle group. I was cracking up on Halloween when I looked over and saw this:

I don’t think there’s any better testament to the ease of using this at anytime than seeing someone decide to work out in their Halloween costume! I had to take a picture because it was entertaining me so much. (He said, “I’m practicing rowing the boat!”)

In terms of physical gains this week, I’m pleased that I’m feeling comfortable doing leg/lower body workouts now. I think back to when I was sitting in a wheelchair after dislocating my knees and feel so grateful that it’s beginning to seem like a more distant memory. I’m definitely ready to put that awful time far, far behind me! For Jai, he mentioned that lifting heavy items is feeling easier. Onwards to week 10!

Paul McCartney – “New” Album Review

Paul McCartney - New

Promotional copy provided for review purposes. This post contains my Amazon Associates links.

The appropriately-named New is the latest album from Paul McCartney, released October 15th. This is his first full album of original material since 2007 – last year’s release, Kisses on The Bottom, was mostly covers. I was very interested to hear what his latest work would be like – music has gone in some very interesting directions in recent years, and major label releases have changed alot in just 6 years. Of course, no one is the master of evolving and changing sounds seamlessly like the creative genius behind Abbey Road, so I was curious indeed to see what this album had in store.

Interestingly, this album reminds me a lot of Duran Duran’s Red Carpet Massacre – not musically, but in terms of direction. Like Massacre, I find New to be one of those albums with a strange dichotomy for me; it’s so catchy, and yet, a departure from the feel I might have expected. This album doesn’t have the same jarring quality as Duran Duran working with Timbaland, of course, but that’s something I’ve noticed in music overall – nothing is jarring anymore. I almost feel like Top 40 music is all being painted with the same bland brush; even unabashed pop seems toned down to me, like it’s all been so strategically designed not to veer away from a corporate concept even slightly. It’s hard for me to express this without it sounding very harsh – this doesn’t mean that I’m not enjoying contemporary music, because far from it – I do enjoy current hits very much. It’s just interesting to me to see where it’s all going. For example, Red Carpet Massacre blew my mind with how bizarre it was, and yet I love it and play it all the time.

So with that being said, I had fun listening to New – my personal favorites on here are “I Can Bet” and “Appreciate”. This album was the soundtrack to my INS appointment, since I was playing it in the car the whole way down to Portland. McCartney’s music has weaved its way through the entirety of my life, and it makes me happy that there continues to be “New” McCartney to enjoy!

Power Rangers Super Samurai: A Christmas Wish DVD

Gift Ideas For The Family

Power Rangers Super Samurai: A Christmas Wish

Promotional Power Rangers DVD was procured! This post contains my Amazon Associates link. Morphinomenal!

One of my favorite things to do during the holidays is watch Christmas specials. I have an eclectic assortment of favorites, but generally speaking I just like to watch holiday-themed episodes of my favorite shows. One classic that I like to pull out is my VHS copy of Alpha’s Magical Christmas , a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers special from when I was a kid, featuring the robot getting the Command Center into the festive spirit. I remember that my mom always thought Alpha was annoying with his constant “Ay-yi-yi-yi-yi”, so I know she must have just loved this full half hour of Alpha singing Christmas carols like, “Deck the halls with boughs of holly, ay-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi!” It’s super cheestastic and makes me super happy! The special is pretty much just Alpha and a group of children singing and decorating a tree, with a small cameo from the Power Rangers at the end.

Well, now I don’t even have to pull out my VCR to watch this, because it’s been included in a new DVD release called Power Rangers Super Samurai: A Christmas Wish. As the name indicates, Alpha has been packaged together with a holiday-themed episode from one of the newest batches of Rangers. I haven’t watched “Super Samurai Stuck on Christmas” yet because it doesn’t feel Christmas-y to be watching this when I still have Halloween stuff in the yard, but I can’t wait until I can bust out a mug of cocoa and curl next to the tree to watch it in December. You guys know I love the Samurai Rangers too, so I can’t wait to see what their Christmas special is going to be like.

Also included on the DVD is an episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers called “Forever Friends”, which feels like filler to me since it has absolutely nothing to do with the holidays. Couldn’t they have put I’m Dreaming of a White Ranger on here instead for the Christmas trifecta? Oh well, good thing I own a VHS copy of that too. 😉

Power Rangers Super Samurai: A Christmas Wish is available on retailers such as Amazon for a suggested retail price of $14.98.

Total Gym XLS: Month 2 Recap

We’ve been using our Total Gym XLS for two months now – wow! Here are our measurements from today, compared with our measurements from day one:

Total Gym Month 2

Jai has been building muscle in his chest and arms, which is his goal, while losing inches in the waist and thighs – he’s doing great! I’ve been losing on my arms and chest and pretty much holding steady on the lower measurements, which makes sense to me, since I have been primarily been doing arm-based exercises with the XLS. In the last few weeks, I’ve started doing more lower body workouts as I feel more comfortable with it and can do quite a bit of leg exercises now without hearing my knees pop and crunch constantly, so as always, slow and steady wins the race with gently getting my healed knees used to their full athletic capability again.

Given what a stressful, hectic month this has been and that we’ve been on the go constantly, I’m pretty impressed with what we’re continuing to get out of the Total Gym. I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t be happy to be getting these kinds of results from such a small time investment. We’ve had the unit for two months, and in October I’ve been using the XLS for an average of maybe 30-40 minutes 3-4 days a week. (I used it 5 days a week in September, when I wasn’t going out of town every weekend…) It’s nice to know that you can still hold steady and make progress when months are as overwhelming as this one!

My Weekend in Chicago

Kenmore Blogger Summit 2013

Travel consideration provided by Kenmore.

On Friday and Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending the Kenmore Blogger Summit in Chicago for MomStart. It was a whirlwind trip – as I indicated earlier, between this and the INS, I got very few hours of sleep and left mucho early in the morning in order to get to the airport in time. I went straight from the flight to the event (With a 10-minute stop at the hotel to drop off my bag), so my makeup was melting off my face but I don’t think I scared anyone too badly. 😉

I was so excited to meet many bloggers that I’ve been pals with for ages, and made fast friends with the new bloggers that I met. The Kenmore team was a lot of fun, and packed the days full of activities like a crazy Iron Chef-style competition that I somehow managed to win, a Yankee Blogger Gift Exchange, exploding fruitcakes, appliance talk, holiday tips, cookbooks (Including one with recipes submitted by all the bloggers at the summit), cocktails and delicious food. SO MUCH delicious food!

I have friends and family in and near Chicago, so everyone was telling me to visit them, but since I was going straight from the airport to the event and then back again, there just wasn’t time. I mention this only so that my loved ones will know I wasn’t snubbing them. 😉 However, I did discover that there was time on the second morning to get up an hour early for an impromptu 6:30 AM walking tour with Marina and Malini. We were staying at Hotel Felix, which is in downtown Chicago, so we were able to walk to a surprising number of landmarks in an hour. I walked past sights like the Chicago River, NBC building and Chicago Tribune – I’ve been to Chicago on flight layovers many times, but I’d never made it into the city before, so this was a treat!

After the event, I headed straight back to the airport to catch my flight back to PDX. In fact, I’m writing my first draft of this as I sit on an airplane since I was lucky enough to be seated in a row with electrical outlets. There are benefits to sitting in the emergency exit row! I’m not exactly sure how many hours of sleep I’ve gotten since Tuesday, but it’s been between 1-4 hours a night so you must forgive me if I’ve missed any egregious typos while proofreading this. 😉 That’s not a complaint, though – I’ve had a great week and the lack of sleep just means that I will have a zombie costume with no makeup required come Halloween this Thursday. 😉

The Kenmore Blogger Summit was a wonderful and fun event – I have detailed recaps going up on MomStart over the next few days, so be sure to click on over for more photos and details on this truly unique event!
