Straight Talk on Blogging – and Teeth?!

Blog Basics

This is a sponsored post.

Recently, I attended a “Mini Bloggy Boot Camp” presented by The SITS Girls. I’d heard high praise for their events from several colleagues, so I made a special trip to Seattle so that I could attend this workshop. I wasn’t disappointed: Tiffany and Francesca gave informative presentations on everything from “Facebook Math” to blog design. Having a day to step away from the computer and brainstorm was really helpful for me; I left feeling re-inspired and invigorated to complete several big projects once I returned, including a complete overhaul of my portfolio and migrating the Bloggers Britain community to Google+.

I also left feeling re-inspired about a rather different topic: My teeth. This Bloggy Boot Camp event was hosted courtesy of Invisalign, who were on hand to tell us a little about their unique form of nearly invisible braces. In the last year or so, I’ve been seriously considering getting braces, as I never had them as a teen and would love to have straight teeth. However, I got turned off after doing a little research into traditional braces and finding out that it can greatly restrict what you can eat and even how you floss. Uh, no thanks! That sounded like a huge pain, and I assumed all tooth straightening methods must work the same way, so I dismissed the idea of getting braces and figured I’d just live with my crooked smile.

Always smile, it makes people think you are up to something.

But when I got to this event and saw the spread of food at our table, I realized I was wrong: Invisalign purposely put snacks like popcorn, pretzels and nuts at our table to make the point that there are no food restrictions with Invisalign. Unlike regular braces, Invisalign is a removable aligner that you take out while eating and brushing your teeth. All of a sudden, my ears perked right up and I began to reconsider my “Forget braces” stance!

Apparently, I was wrong about a lot of things when it comes to Invisalign. I also thought that treatment could take a long time, but I learned that the average treatment time for an adult is one year, depending on the condition of your teeth upon starting. For those starting the tooth straightening journey a little younger than I am – ahem! – there is the specially developed Invisalign Teen, making this treatment available to teens and pre-teens as well as old fogies such as myself. πŸ˜‰

Invisalign compared to braces

To help set the record straight, Invisalign also produced this infographic with more information on the treatment process. And that brings us to the next myth: That Invisalign and Invisalign Teen are a more expensive option for patients (And their parents!) than regular metal braces. As it turns out, the price for treatment is generally comparable to traditional methods and is also covered by many dental insurance plans. To determine the cost of braces with insurance, you can utilize the virtual cost calculator on the Invisalign Website.

Aside from price, why would a parent choose Invisalign Teen for their child? Well, stop for a moment and remember your own teen years. If having the option for clear, unobtrusive treatment is a relief to me at 30, just imagine how much of a relief it is to teenagers who already have more than enough to feel self-conscious about on a daily basis. Teens can take the smile assessment online to get more information about what treatment could potentially do for them. Millennials can also learn more by following Invisalign on Twitter and Facebook!

Are you considering braces for your children (Or yourself)?

My First Trip to Michigan

Ford

Travel and all related consideration provided by Ford Motors.

Last week, I traveled to Dearborn, Michigan to attend Ford‘s annual news briefing & holiday reception on behalf of MiscFinds4u. It was my first visit to the state, and I had a great time!

America's Best-Selling Truck

I arrived on Wednesday night and enjoyed a nice dinner at The Henry Hotel, where I stayed for the duration of my visit. The next morning, I took a bus with the other guests to the Ford Motor Company Conference & Event Center for the unveiling of Ford’s annual trend report, Looking Further with Ford 2014. We were also briefed on company news and developments, and got a close-up look at the Ford Fusion Hybrid automated research vehicle, which Ford created with The University of Michigan and State Farm in order to further develop driverless car technology.

Ford Fusion Hybrid Automated Research Vehicle

After the news briefing, we were able to choose a breakout session to attend to get an in-depth look at various aspects of Ford’s history and current product development – I chose to attend a 3D printing session at the Beech Daly Technical Center, and it was a fascinating experience. I was taken on a tour of the facility to watch industrial 3D printers in action and get a glimpse at the prototypes produced using this method. I even had the chance to get my hands in a vat of nylon dust!

At the end of our tour, everyone in attendance was given a cell phone holder manufactured in one of their 3D printing machines. I thought this was the coolest souvenir – not to mention really useful, I’ve been using it ever since I got home!

Cell Phone Holder Made Using 3D Printing

After the breakout session, there was a quick rest period before we all headed over to Ford’s yearly Holiday Reception. This was a fun party that had everything from a Mustang pool table and toy car races to a candy conveyor belt!

Beeb at The Ford Holiday Reception

I even took home a custom Ford Christmas ornament, which I hung on my tree right next to my Maroon 5 bauble.

The following morning, I flew back to the Pacific Northwest and had an adventure with flight delays at Sea-Tac, which is what I get for traveling on Friday the 13th. πŸ˜‰ But I eventually made it back to Portland and enjoyed a delicious dinner with a friend before heading home to Seaside and passing out.

I had an awesome time during my trip, and this recap barely scratches the surface of everything I saw and did. For detailed recaps, videos, and photos, be sure to follow MiscFinds4U all this week for my coverage!

My Weekend in Chicago

Kenmore Blogger Summit 2013

Travel consideration provided by Kenmore.

On Friday and Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending the Kenmore Blogger Summit in Chicago for MomStart. It was a whirlwind trip – as I indicated earlier, between this and the INS, I got very few hours of sleep and left mucho early in the morning in order to get to the airport in time. I went straight from the flight to the event (With a 10-minute stop at the hotel to drop off my bag), so my makeup was melting off my face but I don’t think I scared anyone too badly. πŸ˜‰

I was so excited to meet many bloggers that I’ve been pals with for ages, and made fast friends with the new bloggers that I met. The Kenmore team was a lot of fun, and packed the days full of activities like a crazy Iron Chef-style competition that I somehow managed to win, a Yankee Blogger Gift Exchange, exploding fruitcakes, appliance talk, holiday tips, cookbooks (Including one with recipes submitted by all the bloggers at the summit), cocktails and delicious food. SO MUCH delicious food!

I have friends and family in and near Chicago, so everyone was telling me to visit them, but since I was going straight from the airport to the event and then back again, there just wasn’t time. I mention this only so that my loved ones will know I wasn’t snubbing them. πŸ˜‰ However, I did discover that there was time on the second morning to get up an hour early for an impromptu 6:30 AM walking tour with Marina and Malini. We were staying at Hotel Felix, which is in downtown Chicago, so we were able to walk to a surprising number of landmarks in an hour. I walked past sights like the Chicago River, NBC building and Chicago Tribune – I’ve been to Chicago on flight layovers many times, but I’d never made it into the city before, so this was a treat!

After the event, I headed straight back to the airport to catch my flight back to PDX. In fact, I’m writing my first draft of this as I sit on an airplane since I was lucky enough to be seated in a row with electrical outlets. There are benefits to sitting in the emergency exit row! I’m not exactly sure how many hours of sleep I’ve gotten since Tuesday, but it’s been between 1-4 hours a night so you must forgive me if I’ve missed any egregious typos while proofreading this. πŸ˜‰ That’s not a complaint, though – I’ve had a great week and the lack of sleep just means that I will have a zombie costume with no makeup required come Halloween this Thursday. πŸ˜‰

The Kenmore Blogger Summit was a wonderful and fun event – I have detailed recaps going up on MomStart over the next few days, so be sure to click on over for more photos and details on this truly unique event!

Don’t Text And Drive: #ItCanWait Blogger Event in Seattle

It Can Wait Seattle Event

Complimentary refreshments & goody bags were provided.

I have never operated a phone while driving. When I see people cruising down the freeway while texting in one hand, eating a slice of pizza in the other, and looking everywhere but the road, it terrifies me. I think people forget that when they step into a car, they are operating a huge machine that could easily cause countless deaths. I’m not trying to be a downer, I just wish people would take driving more seriously.

Texting while driving really blows my mind. Honestly, if I’m a blog event or conference, I often don’t tweet very much until the end of the event because I have a hard time concentrating on two things at once; and I’d rather concentrate my attention on the great people I’m talking to in person and share all my fun photos later. So if I have a hard time simply sending an Instagram photo while having a face-to-face conversation with someone, how in the world could anybody focus enough to text and drive? Answer: They can’t. Here’s just a few links to statistics on cell phone usage and cars:

So when Jai and I were invited to a blogger event sponsored by AT&T in Seattle for National Pledge to Wait Day on September 19th, we were pleased to get involved since we both feel very strongly about the importance of paying attention while driving. Jai is actually the one who taught me how to drive, so I guess his anti-texting stance rubbed off on me since we’re both cautious drivers. πŸ˜‰ The “It Can Wait” event was held at the beautiful Willows Lodge in Woodinville, Washington.

The event was hosted by Louise of MomStart, and I was so excited to finally meet her in person! Louise and I have been reading each other’s sites since we started blogging, and I also began contributing to MomStart earlier in the year. I also got to meet other Seattle bloggers including Saving 4 Five and fellow MomStart contributors Emily and Lynn – it was wonderful hanging out with these great women!

We ate some delicious food over great conversation. One of the things we discussed were the powerful short documentaries that AT&T have put together, sharing the stories of those whose lives have been changed forever due to accidents caused while texting. You may have seen clips from these documentaries aired during TV commercials – you can see the full AT&T Don’t Text While Driving Documentary below, but make sure you have Kleenex handy:

There was also a texting and driving simulator game at the event, so guests could see first-hand the effects of distracted driving – you can try the simulator out for yourself by clicking here.

No Texting on Board!

Jai and I got to take home some fun little swag bags after the event. There’s a “No Text on Board” t-shirt – I’m totally going to wear this the next time I’m in charge of driving people somewhere! – a handy screen cleaner, “It Can Wait” thumb rings, stickers, temporary tattoos, and tasty candy.

So how you can you get involved to stop texting and driving?

Take the pledge at ItCanWait.com and vow never to text while behind the wheel.

Put your phone away when you’re getting into the car to avoid temptation.

Encourage your friends to learn the facts and stop using their phones on the road.

I also think that the culture of “Instant access” puts pressure on people to reply to messages immediately, even when they’re driving or otherwise occupied. Now that cell phones keep us connected 24/7, people have started to confuse promptness with responding to a query within 30 seconds. I have had people start to panic if they can’t get ahold of me for a very mundane matter within half an hour. Remember, people still need to drive, shower, work and sleep; I think if we stop putting so much pressure on each other to be instantly accessible, anytime, anywhere, we can reduce the number of people who feel like they simply must text while driving. I remember the days before cell phones, when you could leave the house and nobody knew where you were; somehow, we all survived just fine! Even if there is a true emergency, the person who is trying to call or text you should be calling 911, not you. So turn off that phone when you get into the car and let people know that you refuse to text and drive – because really and truly, it can wait.

Will you take the pledge with me to stop texting and driving?

PDX Blogger Book Club: Fitness Confidential

Fitness Confidential

This post & “Fitness Confidential” book club event are part of a compensated campaign that I was hired to organize; Amazon Associates links have been used in this article. Bloggers were provided with a complimentary ebook and Starbucks gift card as a thank you for participating. Always consult with your doctor before beginning a weight loss or exercise regime; this article is not intended as health advice or to diagnose, treat or prevent any condition.

I really enjoy getting the chance to meet up with local bloggers, which is partially why I’ve logged so much travel time this summer. So when Word of Mouth Women asked me if I’d like to organize a book club event for area bloggers, I was really excited. The book club was being coordinated to discuss “Fitness Confidential”, written by celebrity trainer Vinnie Tortorich with “Arrested Development” writer Dean Lorey. One part memoir and one part healthy living manual, this book is a humorous, fun read that touts a more common-sense approach to weight loss and exercise over gimmicks and fads. I was eager to see what my colleagues would have to say about this, especially since I met so many great people at FitBloggin’ in June.

Pioneer Courthouse Square

Usually, I would host an event like this at my house, but since I’m the only blogger in Seaside, I knew that wouldn’t work for this type of gathering since everyone else is either in or close to Portland. As I mulled over where to hold the event, I quickly decided on Pioneer Courthouse Square. This brick courtyard in downtown Portland has tons of places to sit, free Wi-Fi, and a Starbucks – where better to hold a book club than a coffee shop?

PDX Book Club Bloggers

On Friday night, a great group of local bloggers came out to hang out, chat, and share their thoughts after reading “Fitness Confidential”. Pictured from left to right are Jennifer from The Quirky Momma, Jodi from The Mama Gut, Evelyn from Momsicle, myself, Mary Ann from A Cloth Life, and Krista of Mostly Mommyhood. We were also joined by my fiance and blogging tech guru Jai, who conveniently offered to hold the camera so he could get out of being in the picture. πŸ˜‰

Book Club Bloggers!

After we all got a cup of coffee and sat down, we began our discussion of “Fitness Confidential”. I was looking forward to hearing everyone’s honest opinions – I figured that if a few people really hated the book, we’d have some lively conversation fodder! But that didn’t end up happening, because our group unanimously enjoyed the book, even those who were expecting to dislike it. A couple of bloggers said that they had been dreading reading it because they thought it would be dull, and were surprised to find that they couldn’t put it down after they started. Lest you think me disingenuous, I’d like to mention that I lead the discussion with several critiques of my own, because I wanted the bloggers to feel comfortable sharing anything they didn’t like about the book.

All of us enjoyed the storytelling in this book and the no-nonsense way in which Tortorich conveys his diet and fitness advice. His philosophy on health is simple and does not involve any elaborate systems or steps: For losing weight, he believes that a no-sugar, no-grain diet is they key, and he also maintains that diet is more important that exercise for getting and keeping weight off. This brought up some really interesting discussion on how this approach could work for us – some of the bloggers had already taken steps by ordering their coffees without sugar, or making bacon for breakfast! What a lot of us appreciated about the book was the fact that he doesn’t tell you to eliminate sugar and grains 100% of the time, since deprivation can really sabotage healthy eating; instead, he advises that you simply avoid grains and sugar most of the time, even if you have cake on your birthday.

This brought up the interesting point of how much work can be involved in eating this way, since so much food contains sugar even when you don’t expect it. Obviously, making all your food from scratch is the ideal way to go, but our group pointed out the challenges that poses when you have several children as well as a full-time job. A working mom who pulls shifts at two jobs before picking her kids up at daycare faces different challenges than a celebrity – so we may have to adapt some of these strategies in order for them to be realistic for our own schedules. I’m sure personal trainers are sick to death of the excuses they hear from their clients, but I think it’s important to remember that some people have very good reasons why their health is on the back burner, so it’s important to look at their life as a whole when addressing potential solutions rather than dismissing everyone as just being lazy. If Tortorich comes out with a book on healthy living for families, I think it’d be a huge hit with our group, and I’m sure he could put together a great one since he’s actually trained children!

The bloggers really enjoyed how Fitness Confidential utilizes funny anecdotes and life experiences to entertain and inspire. The book is full of one-liners which the author refers to as “Vinnie-isms”, with stories ranging from hilarious and surreal moments training his Hollywood clientele to his own triumphs against unimaginable adversity. His style is very opinionated and blunt – our group didn’t seem to really be offended by the language used in the book, although they said they could have gone without some of the more explicit anecdotes about his conquests. In fact, the dismissive jokes about women in the first half of the book seemed to be the only thing that really got our eyes rolling when reading the book.

Discussing the book

As the sun set over Pioneer Square, we wrapped up our book club and said our goodbyes. It was a great evening of thought-provoking discussion – I had such a wonderful time connecting with these great women. I’ll be sharing their reviews on the book with you as they post them, but in the meantime, I will leave you with mine and Jai’s take on Fitness Confidential.

Beeb’s Review:

Beeb reviews Fitness Confidential

I read this book in the car last week during our trip to Orcas Island. Fitness Confidential is a fast, light read – in fact, it took me almost as long to get the Kindle app working as it did for me to read the book! Tortorich and Lorey have created a book that is engaging, compelling, and funny. I loved reading his personal story and was glad that he made this book fun and humorous, because I’m so bored of traditional health books; I was reluctant to put Fitness Confidential down because I was absorbed in the story.

Tortorich’s skewering of the diet/fitness industry is entertaining, and while I don’t agree with him on everything, I think his overall approach makes a lot of sense. When I got to the portion of the book about “No sugar, no grains”, I thought, “Well, I’m out!”. πŸ˜‰ However, everything he says makes sense and the fact that he encourages his clients to still indulge occasionally makes it much more practical for real-world success. I certainly can’t argue that reducing my intake of sugar and bread helps me, because as a matter of fact, I try to avoid keeping those things in the house specifically because I know I will want to snack endlessly on them.

Jai’s Review:

Jai reviews Fitness Confidential

“This book covers a lot of ground in its 240 pages and, no matter your interests, there’s a little bit of something for everyone. Gym rats, weekend joggers, Ultra-racers, and people who just want to lose a few pounds will find something good to walk away with. Vinnie Tortorich has decades of real-world experience as a personal trainer and has seen fad diets come and go. He has a way of distilling a lot of complicated concepts into something that can be adapted into lifestyle changes that work. I can think of two major concepts that I’ll be taking from this book and integrating into my life. The first is the general approach to food. Notice that I didn’t use the word diet in that sentence. The other is the advice on which exercises are most important for weight lifting, and guidelines on the best way to increase the weights as you progress. I’m glad I got a chance to read this book!”

Fitness Confidential is available on Amazon for $9.99. For more information and to listen to the author’s free podcast, visit VinnieTortorich.com.

See’s Candies Grand Re-Opening in Eugene

See's Candies

We were provided with complimentary candy and goodies during this event. Yum! This post also contains affiliate links.

Last Thursday, I was invited to attend an event at See’s Candies in Eugene to celebrate their re-opening. The store had been located in the Valley River Center for almost 40 years, and made the move last Monday to their new location at Lindsey Crossing. To get the word out, media that cover the region were invited to come and check out the location and taste some of the new offerings. The timing on everything worked out perfectly for us, since we were traveling all over the place for events last week; not to mention, I have a dear friend that lives near Eugene and was able to grab lunch with her and catch up before the event.

The location at Lindsey Crossing is very accessible and easy to find, which is why the store wanted to move there – Jai and I had never driven to this shopping area before and it was effortless getting there. Once we arrived, the staff welcomed us in and invited us to try any of the candies that caught our eye. Talk about being a kid in a candy store!

White Mint Truffle

When they asked me what I’d like to try, I knew I had to taste the White Mint Truffle. I’m a little obsessed with peppermint and I love white chocolate, so it looked like something that was right up my alley!

If you love mint like I do…I don’t think you’ll be disappointed in this one. YUM!

We sampled so many delicious candies at this event.

I snapped this photo at the exact moment that Jai bit into a piece of Maple Cashew Brittle. The look you see on his face was him saying Mmmmmm because it was even tastier than he expected!

Candy contest

During the event, they had a fun contest where we all split into teams of two and competed to see who could pack a box of candy the fastest. Jai and I got a crash course from the pros on how to hold the candy cups for maximum efficiency – it’s a little like dealing cards!

Jai & Beeb after the candy packing contest

Special thanks to Cariann for offering to hold my camera and take these photos of us!

Jai and I finished our boxes at almost the same time, but his box looked better than mine so he was the winner this time. πŸ˜‰ We got to keep the boxes that we packed, and were both given a copy of See’s Famous Old Time Candies: A Sweet Story by Margaret Moos Pick as a prize. We learned all kinds of fun history and trivia about the company – for example, did you know that the famous candy conveyor belt episode of I Love Lucy was filmed at See’s Candies? When I was participating in the candy contest, I told them that I resisted the temptation to shove it all in my mouth instead of the box the way Lucy did. πŸ˜‰

At the end of event, we were all given a fun See’s tote bag packed with goodies to take home. It was perfect timing, since we spent the week staying with Jai’s brother and sister-in-law in Portland – really, what makes a sweeter hostess gift than a box of candy?

Busy Week Ahead – Blog Events Galore! (Will I Meet You at One of Them?)

I’ve only just gotten back from Wyoming, and now I’m hitting the road once again! On Wednesday, I’m heading to PDX to catch an advance screening of The Lone Ranger. Then on Thursday, I’m off to Eugene to visit a dear friend and attend a blogger event for the opening of a See’s Candies store. And Friday through Sunday, I’ll be back in Portland for FitBloggin’13! I’m very excited for the conference and will be participating as a liveblogger for a session on Saturday morning, Stop Keeping Up with the Joneses.

If you will be at FitBloggin’, please let me know – I’d love to meet you! Likewise, if you’re in the Eugene area and will be at the See’s Candies event (Or would like an invite), get in touch!
